This green chili tempeh and tofu vegetable dish, often called "desa" or village vegetable, is a staple in daily meals throughout Central Java.

Instructions
- Saute ground spices, galangal and bay leaves until fragrant.
- Add the sliced shallots and garlic and brown sugar, stir until the onions soften. Add tempeh, stir well.
- Add water until the tempeh is submerged, let it boil and the spices are absorbed.
- Add the tofu, petai, green chilies and whole cayenne pepper, stir well. Add thick coconut milk.
- Season with sugar, salt and seasonings, taste test.
- Cook until it boils and the coconut milk reduces slightly.
- The sauce reduces quickly because it is absorbed by the tempeh, you can add water as desired.
